Goodness, it's been a while! I was going to post pictures of all the knitted things I sent to MissMeshell (although there's still one more package on the way!) but then I realized that her pictures are of a much higher quality than mine, so just check out her post here of what I sent. I'd like to think I spoiled her, but receiving the package she sent me was better than Christmas, so I think we're fairly even!

Ahhhh... these pictures are terrible! I was sort of in a rush taking them -- these were birthday gifts for Tim's nieces and I finished just before the deadline. The ring and nestlace were sent to the oldest, who was turning 13, and the cat (Knitty's Kate) went to one of the younger ones.

A while back I made this drop-stitch scarf out of the yarn I bought from the Mystical Creations etsy shop, which appears to have been shut down since then. Something scandalous, probably, although my experience with them was fine. I also made a quick pair of fingerless mitts for a woman at work's birthday; she seemed really pleased with them and touched that I'd made them for her.

I am pretty sure that my lack of green thumb (or maybe the cats' constant munching) is to blame for my crown of thorns not flowering anymore, but maybe it was just time. Anyway, underneath the pot is the knit placemat I made a while back out of some amazingly soft cotton. I meant to make two, but I didn't really like the way it turned out, so now I have a big old ball of the cotton buried away in my stash.

Last but not least, my recent attempts at spinning. I am getting pretty okay at it, as long as I pay attention to what I'm doing and coax my antique wheel (inherited from my grandmother) along the whole way. I love the wheel and I love that it seems to know who's sitting at it and how they're feeling -- and act accordingly. Sometimes, it seems like it would be easier to just go out and buy a brand new wheel, one that hasn't had time to grow persnickety, but I also like that my wheel* has character, and I like to think that shows up in the yarn. The yarn from left to right is a bamboo/merino blend plied with thread, handpainted merino from FatCatKnits, handpainted blue-faced leicester from Northwest Wools, and soy silk plied with metallic embroidery thread from India. I have two skeins drying in my bathroom right now that I'll be taking pictures of soon.

*I'm still deciding on a name for her -- I suggested that Meshell name her wheel Elinor, but now I'm growing fond of that name myself. Hmmm....

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Did you know....

Breast cancer is one of the two leading causes of cancer death in women (the other is lung cancer).

There is a 1 in 8 chance of a woman being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during her lifetime in the United States; there is a 1 in 33 chance that she will die from it.

The breast cancer death rate is declining, presumably due to earlier detection and improved treatment.

Although the death rate of women diagnosed with breast cancer is declining, we have a long way to go to protect our mothers, daughters, aunts, sisters, friends, and selves from this disease. I am participating in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk this May. The money raised from this event will be used to promote early detection and in programs for those whose lives are affected by breast cancer.

I hope that if you're reading this, you'll help me support the fight against breast cancer, either by donating to the American Cancer Society (every little bit helps!) or by joining me in the walk on May 13th. Our individual actions may be small, but together we can make a big difference!

After many problems with my blogger account -- weird language settings and cookie issues -- I've finally figured it out! What a pain. I'm glad to have access to my blog again, though, since there are a number of things I've been meaning to post.

I'm still searching for the perfect grocery tote pattern. This one was okay, but I made it a little smaller than I should have, I think. It went to Sara, the manager of Glad Rags, for her birthday. She shares a birthday with one of my clients, who also works at Glad Rags. The hat was for him, in Blazers colors since he's quite the fan. The teeny little hat in the picture was sent to my cousin Jessie, whose baby Hailey was born in February. I had originally made two pairs of booties to go with, but the cats stole one of each pair and I was too lazy/busy to make new sets!

I'm particularly proud of this little fella. He was made for the One Tiny Thing Swap (round 11!) on Craftster. I used the SWAT Team Kitties pattern and gave him a gold earring, sailor shirt, and eye-patch to piratize him. If the pattern had legs, I would have given him a pegleg, too!

Next term is going to be a busy one for me, but I'm hoping that my lecture classes/bus rides will allow me plenty of knitting time. I'm also taking Ceramics, which I'm quite excited about, and a spinning class at a local yarn shop. Finally I'll conquer my wheel!

Moses and I have just returned from the park on the loveliest, springiest day of the year so far. The birds have been chirping raucously for a couple of weeks, and the daffodils have been hesitantly waking up, but today -- with the buds of the magnolias and camellias looking like they might burst open at any moment -- was definitively spring.*

Today I had my first experiment with RIT dye, dyeing a linen skirt obtained at a Naked Lady Party.** The skirt began life an unfortunate pale pink, about the same color of my skin when I'm feeling somewhat ill. One bubbling pot of ick and ten stained fingernails later, it emerged blue... ish. I'm not too pleased with the way it turned out; it looks sort of denim-y and uneven, and considerably less "royal" than it did at first. I might buy more of the same and dye over it, but I'll probably just be lazy and wear it as is.

*Yes, I know that spring doesn't "officially" start for another two weeks and no, I don't care.

**I am all about the footnotes today! A Naked Lady Party doesn't actually involve any naked ladies -- it's a clothing swap party.

Spending money like it's goin' out of style

Have I mentioned lately how much I love Etsy? Especially since the new version came out? I love it. It's the perfect blend of four of my favorite things: cuteness, crafts, technology, and stuff I can buy.

In the interest of plugging some really fabulous sellers on Etsy (and, okay, showing off a bit), here are some items I've purchased recently:

The first is one of three postcard-sized print from BirdNerd, whose original art I would buy in a heartbeat if I could justify to myself spending that much on prettiness. The second is a 10x8 print entitled "Cold Toes, Warm Heart" which is painfully adorable in and of itself. The seller, TheBlackApple, had to relist this particular print twice for me because other people kept snatching it up. Highly coveted, this artist is. The last picture is a skein of handpainted yarn from Mystical Creation Yarn. It's a wool/silk blend, I bought two skeins, and it is for a SUPER TOP SECRET project that I can't wait to start!

For the past two months I've been trying to stick to a budget I created after reading about financial responsibility in my Personal Finance textbook and felt horribly guilty. I'm pretty sure I've gone over my crafting budget for the month already, but there were SALES, people, SALES! The yarn store was celebrating its second year in business while the bead store had lost its lease and is going out of business, which is sad but also makes for some great deals. Some other time I'll post pictures of all the (totally un-needed but fun nonetheless) earrings I've made.

Above is the knit nautilus I made for trifarina (I sent her a nautie eyepatch too but didn't get a good photo of it in action) along with the valentines I made for the party we're having at work on Wednesday. The whale stamp is my new favorite thing.

I've been aching to post pictures of what I've been working on lately, but since most of it is for swaps, it'll have to wait for another week or two until my partners receive.

Surprisingly, there are a few things I've made lately that weren't for swaps. First, a basket/bowl I made with Crystal Palace Taos yarn and felted in the washing machine.

I'm using to hold some yarn at the moment, although I'm not sure if its purpose will change in the future. I checked out Cat Bordhi's Treasuries of Magical Knitting from the library and I really want to make one of her moebius baskets, but that will have to wait for some suitable yarn.

This afternoon I made a few cards, in keeping with my goal of sending every member of my extended family a birthday card. Devilninny sent me a number of birthday cards for the previous round of the Invite Your Partner swap on Craftster, but I've almost run out already! I made these four today, and one is already in an envelope and ready to send to my aunt Karen. While making these cards, I've come to the following conclusions:
1) Glue sticks are magic.
2) Rub-on letters are magic.
3) I need a craft table (specifically, I need a craft table other than our dining room table!)
My mom and I have vague plans for a craft day of churning out tons and tons of birthday cards, which I'm wholeheartedly looking forward to -- especially because she keeps calling me to tell me about all of the hidden craft supplies she's stumbled across at her house!

This hat was sent for the Fairytale Swap. I'm assuming my parter has received, but she hasn't been on Craftster in over a month. I hope everything's okay and that she's enjoying the hat! If you can't tell, it's meant to look like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. It was knit in about one and a half days of classes last term.

I'm having a minor freak-out right now. I've been hard at work knitting this for myself since before Christmas. I spent quite a bit of time working to get the gauge right, but I just tried it on and it's way bigger than I wanted it to be. ARGH. Argh argh argh.

I absolutely refuse to frog so much work, so I'm just going to keep going and hope to high heaven that it'll look okay in the end. So much for a cute fitted shirt.

Shouting Across the Divide

With the house pretty much empty except for the pets, I've been spending a lot of time filling it with other people's voices -- mainly those on public radio, especially Ira Glass. If you haven't yet listened to last week's episode of This American Life, you should, especially because you can hear it for free here [episode 322: Shouting Across the Divide]. Be forewarned, however: it will probably make you cry.

I'm so pleased that my dedication to mailing holiday cards to all of my relatives is starting to pay off; this year, I've received at least seven different cards and letters from family, most notably "Uncle Bud"* who not only personally wrote quite a bit in his card, but also included two photographs and a newspaper clipping. This is, for a lack of a better word, totally awesome, especially because I'm not even sure I've ever met Uncle Bud. Hopefully I will someday, so I can tell him personally how great it was to get his card.

I also received a card from two folks from Craftster who are apparently trying to earn the title of Best Craftsters Ever. Millik and fizzledimpulse, if I am ever in your part of the country, I will be bringing you some cookies. Don't forget, I know where you live!

I have so many crafty projects in the works and so many more that I'd love to start on (especially some personal swaps that keep getting delayed) that I'm really ready for Christmas to be over. If you know me, you know how much it pains me to say that! I love this time of year and I love nearly everything about the Christmas season -- except of course the rampant consumerism and the occasional proselytizing -- but I'm feeling ready to move on.

Fortunately, it's almost over, and then I'll be able to post pictures of the ____ I ____ for my sister, which turned out to be my best ____ ____ ever!

*I put his name in quotes because he's not my uncle; until recently I wasn't even sure how exactly he was related to me. As far as I know, he's my father's mother's brother.

On the 12th day of Christmas...

Oh, how I love having crafty family members! My wonderful aunt Ruth just sent me an enormous box full of goodies: knitting needle cozies, knitting patterns and magazines (with patterns for knit birds and pears!), beautiful roving, a wire candle decoration, a kit for a felted coin purse, and a "dinkel sheep."* And probably more that I'm forgetting, but the point is: she's fabulous and I am spoiled!

I also want to post a picture of a nestlace I made for Craftster millik for a personal swap, because I think it turned out really nicely. The "eggs" are red with black speckles, and the clasp is a leaf toggle.

In return she sent me a tote bag featuring both Ramona Quimby AND straps long enough to fit over my shoulder when I'm wearing my wool coat -- perfect for winter!

I set up my Christmas tree last week and have yet to get a decent photograph of it due to the camera's batteries being dead and my inability to locate the battery charger. So, there may not be any photographic evidence of its awesomeness/Charlie Brownness before it completely dries out. You'll just have to trust me that it is the Best Tree Ever.

Now I just have to figure out when exactly I'm going to finish everyone's Christmas gifts, considering that I'm working or visiting family every day until Christmas Eve! Time to get to work...

* Dinkel refers to a certain family in Alaska whose sheep's wool was found in my aunt's attic. The dinkel sheep referred to in this post is a little ceramic votive-holder sheep whose votive-holding spot now holds a felted ball of dinkel wool. Make sense? ;)

I'm missing out on knitting group today due to an upset stomach and a weird case of light - headedness. Instead, I'm staying home and knitting while watching Christmas shows on television. Not as cool as knitting group, but not entirely bad either.

At knitting group #1, I started working on some knit sushi for an ongoing swap on Craftster. Now that Dulcinea has received from me, I can post a picture! I think it's pretty funny that I can't stomach sushi, but I love the way it looks.

I've been working like crazy making Christmas decorations for my house and my (soon!) tree, so expect a picture-laden post of total festivity in the next week or so. I'm almost done with my Christmas cards, too. If only I could say the same for Christmas gifts!

On the subject of decorations, this is the first year I'm going to have my own Christmas tree, and I hardly have any ornaments at this point. My "theme" is going to be birds, fruit, and snowflakes. So far I have some cheapo gold snowflakes I bought at Target, a painted snowflake ornament and four pears found at Goodwill and dusted with shimmery gold powder, and a beaded garland. I'm looking for patterns (preferably free) for knit/felted birds, so if anyone knows of any, please let me know! I've only been able to find crochet patterns thus far, which doesn't help much. I may end up just making some out of craft felt and embellishing them with embroidery, but I'd really love to knit some for my tree.

Back to working on a TOP SECRET project while I watch bizarre new Christmas specials and cuddle with Rusty!

Ultimate Soul Christmas!!

Liz burned me a CD called "Ultimate Soul Christmas" and it is pretty much the best thing ever, if not for the sheer awesomeness of the compilation itself, then at least for the reaction it gets from my housemates. I love it. Our knitting group meets (for the second time, hooray!) at her house tonight, so I hope she plays it.

Not craft-related whatsoever, but today is World AIDS day. I suggest you recognize it by doing one or more of the following things:
- set up an appointment to get tested for HIV if you aren't 100% sure of your status
- talk to your current sexual partner(s) about their history
- research how many people die every day from this totally preventable disease
- write to your elected officials about why you think it's important to fund HIV/AIDS prevention programs
- talk to your friends about how to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS
- donate money to fund HIV/AIDS prevention programs or research
- educate yourself (and everyone you know!) about HIV/AIDS

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's officially the holiday season! Of course, I've been talking about Christmas since September, but now I can shamelessly hum carols and work on my holiday cards without looking like such a basket case. Unfortunately, most of the things I've made intending to give as Christmas gifts have already been given to the recipient. I made sure to buy some wrapping paper a few days ago, so from now on, anything that's finished will be getting wrapped immediately so I'll be less likely to give it away early.

And no, the picture doesn't have anything to do with anything, but I got sidetracked midway through this post and couldn't think of anything else to say. I think Moses in a helmet says it all, don't you?

I made myself a pair of legwarmers out of an old sweater (cut off the sleeves, then stitched up the back to make them fit my calves) this morning because they went perfectly with my skirt and cardigan. It put a spring in my step all day long, I looked so cute.

Then, during class, I knit myself a hat out of some soft, fuzzy yarn that I like to think looks like polar bear fur. I sort of rushed through it because it was so chilly out, but I finished it in time to wear home!

I felt incredibly vain all day in my legwarmers and later my hat, so I checked myself out in every reflective surface I walked past just to verify that I did indeed look totally foxy. It felt pretty good.

Blogging is for Lovers

So it's probably totally nerdy to post twice in one day, but the knitting group was a success! Victoria's apartment is totally cute, and on my way I ran into Liz on the bus, so I had someone to talk with during the ride. It was fun, and I'm hoping it'll happen again. I knit a really cute little sushi roll while I was there and started on another. Next I'm knitting some Blythe clothes for Chloeiscrazy for a Craftster swap.

My penchant for instant gratification has led to an overwhelming interest in knitting for infants. Behold:

Hat and booties for my cousin's baby, due in a few months. Please excuse the streak of marker on my thumb.

My first hat made for the Caps to the Capital project. The yarn was sent to me by devilninny for a swap on Craftster. I'm also making a pair of booties with it, which will be for my cousin's baby as well.

The first meeting of my knitting group (composed of myself and a few other girls from school) was supposed to be tonight, but two of them had possible schedule conflicts and outside the weather is looking ominous -- there's even a "wind advisory" in effect -- so I'm kind of happy to just stay home and be cozy.

And before I forget: my wonderfully crafty aunt has started a craft blog! Hooray!

Knit for a good cause!

"Can something as simple as a knit or crochet cap help save a newborn life?

In many poor countries, the answer is yes. Four million newborns die each year within the first month of life – half within only the first 24 hours after being born.
But a package of simple health measures provided to mothers and babies worldwide, including antibiotics to fight infections, training for skilled birth attendants, immunizations against tetanus, education on breastfeeding and basic care such as drying a newborn baby and keeping it warm (this is where the caps come in!) could prevent 70 percent of these deaths.

These babies need more than caps – they need your voice, too.

The United States can lead the way in saving young lives by increasing funding for these critical health measures for mothers and children in developing countries. But we need your help. Let America’s leaders know that you’re willing to do your part, and together we can do much more."

Knit or crochet a hat for a newborn and send it (along with a letter -- prewritten or in your own words -- about why the U.S. needs to become a leader in preventative health care) to Save the Children, which will lead a rally in Washington D.C. next year. The caps will be delivered to the various countries around the world in which Save the Children operates.

The ants go marching

Last night I finished the hat I was making for Mr. Catpants (hooray for internet semi-anonymity!) and, not to toot my own horn or anything, but it's pretty damn fabulous. I used Mission Falls 1824 wool in "heath" -- absolutely wonderful to knit with, it was like a massage for my fingertips -- and modified a free pattern I found to make a hat large enough to fit his giant noggin.

Also last night, I managed to knit a few rounds backwards (and skipping a needle) on the socks I'm making for myself. I'm so irritated that I don't even want to look at it right now. That'll teach me to knit when I really just need to go to bed.

In other news, I'm squished in between the stereo and the bookshelf, as we had to move my desk last night in order to spray pesticides all over the baseboards. That's right, the ridiculous amount of rain we've had is causing flash-floods in Tillamook AND floods of ants in my living room. I always thought the ants were supposed to go marching down, to the ground, to get out of the rain, not up into my house to party on my desk.

Craftster user orange_sunset is looking for help making a "memory quilt" for her dad from fabric her grandmother passed on to her. She's not a quilter, so she's looking for help. If you want to give her a hand, she'll mail you some of her grandma's fabric for you to make a quilt block or two out of. She'll piece all the different blocks together herself, but she needs 56 of them (hopefully by Christmas). If you're interested, check out her post on Craftster and let her know!

My wrists are warm!

I finally finished my lovely alpaca wristwarmers. I am so proud of myself! It took about two months just to figure out how to knit in the round (thanks, Shauna!) but once I got going, they only took about four hours each. They're so cozy and just in time for the freezing rain we've got going on here. On the downside, they have a tendency to fuzz all over the place. Yesterday someone looked at my (black) coat and asked, "so, how many cats do you have?" What could I say? The fuzz you see here is mostly yarn-related, but yes, I do live in a four-cat household.
I'm thinking I should post a picture of Rusty (the new feline addition to the household -- solely Marc's doing) since he's the one who has thoroughly derailed my skinny scarf project by stealing my yarn and reducing it to a hairy mess. I keep telling him, "you're cute now, but nobody's going to like you if you keep doing this stuff when you grow up."

Meagan and I spent far too long in the yarn section of Joann's yesterday, but we made it out with some pretty good deals. I have two new projects in the works: a long, skinny scarf for myself (made with the sofest. yarn. ever.) and a checkered throw pillow for the house. I also bought some size 3 dpns for no apparent reason, but I'm sure I'll find a use for them.

Also! Look to the sidebar! I spent far too long figuring out how to get progress meters to work, so now you will be able to see how far along I am on whatever it is I happen to be knitting! I can tell you are all very excited.

Now, off to work on my craftster trading card and maybe eventually write a paper.

I'm at work right now wishing I was at home finishing up cupcake number two. Needless to say, it looks MUCH better than the first, and it's taken about the half the time. This bodes well for the fingerless gloves I'm planning on (re)starting this weekend.

I have so much crafty stuff to catch up on this weekend! I still need to finish my swap package for the Use What You Have Swap I'm organizing on craftster, and a few things for devilninny, and get started on a project for a personal swap. Plus I'm trying to get a head start on Christmas gifts and cards. I'm hoping I can get most of my school stuff out of the way this afternoon so I can devote the entire weekend to crafting.

Also exciting is the big sale at Joann's this weekend. I have tons of coupons and I just got my brand-new Joann's credit card in the mail yesterday. Honestly, I only applied for it because you get $5 off any purchase the first time you use it. And because it has a pretty picture of thread on it. Hopefully I can control myself.

Alright, back to work. Only 30 more minutes!

I am SO proud of myself right now, you have no idea. I actually completed a project with double-pointed needles. Yes, I may have made a few mistakes, and yes, I'm pretty sure I did the pattern inside-out, but look! Look at that cute little cupcake! Don't you just wanna eat him up? Even better, it only took me two days to knit and didn't frog a bit of it. It probably would've looked better had I gone back to fix my mistakes, but at the moment I am just so darn proud of myself that I don't care. Cupcakes win!!

Craft Woes

I pretty much destroyed my hole-punch by trying to punch something that was way too thick (and still sort of glue-y) and then broke off a chunk of my scissors trying to pry it back open. Fortunately, the thing I was working on made it out safely.

Later, a GIANT spider practically jumped out of a pile of tissue paper at me. Horrifying, I tell you. Today has not been my day.

On the bright side, I finished up my "Use what you have" swap package for serialcrafter and stuffed some crockpot-dyed yarn into an envelope for my sister. I'm trying to get as much done as possible before I head to the post office on Monday.

Off to craft -- wish me luck!

So here I am, jumping on the latest bandwagon: craft blogging. Fortunately for you all, I'm suffering from a head cold and am too loopy from the store-brand medication I took earlier to write much at all. My poor swap partners; I'm still going to attempt to craft today. Here's hoping I don't ruin everything in my haze.
